First let me take a moment to offer my condolences to Thom Hartmann (radio talk show host and author) and his family, who's mother, Jean, passed away over the weekend. I am truly sorry for your loss.
My own mother, Susie, died without her children by her side, in an ambulance half way between Bullhead City and Needles. She deserved much better.
Okay, to Representative Michelle Bachmann. Well I hardly know where to start. How about the recent swine flu "pandemic." She had this to say: "I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970s that the swine flu broke out then under another Democrat president Jimmy Carter. And I'm not blaming this on President Obama, I just think it's an interesting coincidence."
Now what do you think she may be implying here? That Democratic presidents have some secret plan to kill off the country using biological warfare? Yes, I believe she is. Now I do think that Ms Bachmann is an ideologue, completely without scruples, and a little nuts, but in this instance she is right. Not only do Democratic presidents want to kill off the country using biological weapons, i.e., the influenza virus, but democrats in general do as well. That's just the way we are. It doesn't make any sense, but that's what we want. That damn Bill Clinton just couldn't get with the secret program though, hence no major outbreaks during his years in office, just the usual 36,000 deaths a year.
Whoow, wait a second. I just found this little tidbit on the Internet machine: "Human outbreaks of swine flu – an illness caused by types of viruses that are typically endemic to pigs (hence the name) – can occur, but are typically rare. The last time there was major public concern over swine flu in the United States was in 1976, when a soldier at Fort Dix died and millions of Americans were immunized as a precaution." "The Fort Dix cases became international news and spurred then-U.S. president Gerald Ford to begin a national flu vaccination program, which Jimmy Carter continued."
It seems Bachmann neglected to look that up before opening her big yap. So it's the Republicans who are trying to kill off the country with unnecessary vaccinations. Those bastards.
This is not the only instance of her getting the facts wrong. Not by a long shot.
On April 27th she spoke from the House floor to decry Franklin Roosevelt's signing into law the Hoot-Smalley Act, which raised tarrifs on over 20,000 imported goods to record levels. 1,028 economists signed a petition against this law, and many countries retaliated by raising their own tarrifs on goods made in the U.S. As a result American exports and imports were reduced by half.Representative Bachmann infers that this action turned a recession into the Great Depression of the 1930s, implying that President Obama economic stimulus measures will do the same.
Only there's a teensy weeny problem with her argument, like it doesn't exist. The Act to which Ms Bachmann is referring to was the Smoot-Hawley Act, signed into law on June 17, 1930 by Herbert Hoover, a Republican, three years before Roosevelt took office.
I do thank Michelle for unintentionally reminding us that it was the Republican Great Depression, begun by Republicans, caused in large part by deregulating Wall Street, which turns out to be the same cause of our current economic woes.
Here's what she says about the Speaker of the House and Global Warming: ""[Pelosi] is committed to her global warming fanaticism to the point where she has said that she's just trying to save the planet. We all know that someone did that over 2,000 years ago, they saved the planet -- we didn't need Nancy Pelosi to do that."
So Jesus is going to save us from Global Warming! That's her plan to deal with the greatest environmental threat humanity has ever faced. Thank you, Jesus. That's one less thing we have to worry about.
While researching information for this post I came across this blog from "Steve Young on Politics," referencing Arlen Spector's switch to the Democratic Party.
"Representative Michele Bachmann (R, Minn) announcement today that she planned to re-register as a Democrat, has sent the Democratic Leadership into crisis mode."
"When I woke up this morning I found that someone had scrawled, 'Arlen makes a lot of sense,' on my bedroom wall and it looked a lot like Mitch's (Senate Minority Leader McConnell) handwriting."
"We're telling Congresswoman Bachmann that we already have maxed out the number of Democrats allowed," said Democratic Majority Leader, Nancy Pelosi. "If that doesn't work we're just going to bolt the door."
All kidding aside the type of ignorance sited above can have serious ramifications.
"I want people in Minnesota armed and dangerous on this issue of the energy tax because we need to fight back. Thomas Jefferson told us, having a revolution every now and then is a good thing, and the people — we the people — are going to have to fight back hard if we’re not going to lose our country. And I think this has the potential of changing the dynamic of freedom forever in the United States."
This is an act of open sedition, calling for armed resistance against lawful actions of the federal government. It should be illegal, and according to section 2383 of title 18 of U.S. Code, she could be locked up for ten years.
What I can't understand is how this person got elected to Congress in the first place. Come on Minnesota, let us have Al Franken, and take back Michelle Bachmann.
Please.
