At this moment I am watching the last combat brigade of American troops leave Iraq. It was 3:49AM local time in Iraq, and the gate just closed on the Iraqi/Kuwait boarder after the last transport vehicle passed through. Today is historic.
This ends, finally, an extraordinary period in the history of the United States. 50,000 troops will be left in the country in a "training status," rather than combat, for supportive services (Operation New Dawn).
This... conflict, has lasted almost 7 and a half years, costing the lives of at least 4,415 soldiers, sailors, Marines, and aviators, and at least 32,000 wounded.
